Singapore's industrial production decreased for the first time in four months in June, defying economists' expectations for an increase, preliminary figures from the Economic Development Board showed Tuesday.

Industrial production fell 0.3 percent year-over-year in June, reversing a 0.8 percent climb in the previous month. It was expected to rise by 0.5 percent.

Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output advanced by 2.4 percent.

Among components, the transport engineering cluster's output plunged the most by 17.2 percent annually in June, followed by output of the the biomedical manufacturing cluster with 10.2 percent decline.

The chemicals cluster's output dropped 5.1 percent and those of general manufacturing industries cluster logged a fall of 4.5 percent.

At the same time, the electronics cluster's output surged 19.7 percent on year and output of the precision engineering rose by 4.3 percent.

Monthly, industrial production dipped a seasonally adjusted 2.5 percent in June, faster than the 1.4 percent drop expected by economists. It was the second consecutive monthly decline.
