South Africa's producer price inflation slowed in January, Statistics South Africa reported Thursday.

Producer prices for manufactured goods climbed 5.9 percent year-on-year in January, slower than December's 7.1 percent increase.

This was the slowest rate since December 2015, when inflation was 4.8 percent. Economists had forecast inflation to ease moderately to 6.6 percent.

Month-on-month, producer prices rose 0.4 percent in January, slower than the expected 1 percent.

Prices of intermediate goods climbed 6.7 percent and that of electricity and water advanced 10 percent. Similarly, producer prices in the mining sector moved up 10.7 percent. Prices of agriculture products, meanwhile, fell 2.9 percent.
