2018.09.2001:25:00UTC+00Dutch Consumer Confidence Weakens; Jobless Rate Rises

Dutch consumer confidence weakened for the second straight month and unemployment increased after falling a month ago, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported Thursday.

The consumer sentiment index dropped to 19 in September from 21 in August. This was the lowest reading since October 2016.

Consumers were less positive about general economic situation and own financial situation. Consequently, they viewed current situation less favorable for making major purchases.

In a separate communique, the office said consumer spending growth remained stable at 2.6 percent in July. Consumers spent more on food and beverages, durable goods and cars, while their spending on house furnishing and household items decreased in July.

Another report from the statistical office showed that the jobless rate rose slightly to 3.9 percent in August from 3.8 percent in July. The number of unemployed rose to 353,000 from 348,000 in the previous month.
