The number of unemployed persons in Spain increased 4.6% or by 139,694 persons in December from the previous month to 3.1 million, a report by the Labor Ministry said Thursday.

Among the sectors, the construction sector had the largest number of unemployed followed by the services sector.

There were 1.57 million unemployed males and 1.55 million females in the month.

Unemployment for the youth aged below 25 years declined by 62 persons or 0.02% in December compared to the previous month. Among those older than 25, unemployment increased 5.3%.

The Secretary General for Employment, Maravillas Rojo said the latest unemployment data confirms the deterioration of employment.

The Secretary General said, "We are experiencing a global situation that is new and unprecedented and the year 2009 will be very difficult, to the extent that unemployment will continue to grow as a result of the collapse of production and consumption."
