Oil prices steadied on Tuesday after the first indication of a crude output cut organized by producer cartel OPEC and other exporting countries materialized, balancing a market that has been struggling with a supply overhang for more than two years.

The international Brent crude futures traded up 7 cents at $55.76 per barrel from their last close. Meanwhile, the U.S. WTI lost 7 cents at $52.76 per barrel, as American producers refused to join the cut.

The higher prices of Brent came after oil markets rose to mid-2015 peaks earlier this week after OPEC and other non-OPEC exporters agreed on their first deal since 2001 to reduce output by around 1.8 million bpd to help tighten the oil markets.

In an indication that producers are living up to their pledges, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company told its clients that it will lower its crude supplies by 3-5%, two sources said. In a notice to its customers, it announced It will lower its three export grades, reducing Murban and Upper Zakum crude output both by 5% and Das crude exports by 3%.
